Artists of the computer, of the digital software, of the graphic tablet, or of the mouse; I have a challenge for you.
There has been a debate that, if you use digital media for your art, it means you do not have any skill.
Why? Because, oh, so simply; edit buttons, and CRTL-Z.
When you use traditional media, it is oh so messy, yet if you are skilled, and if you make a mistake, you can try to improvise to make the error look as though it is a deliberate part of the artwork and so on.
When you use digital media, when you are finished with the colours, you can edit it until your hearts content. You can also sketch a million lines and CTRL-Z it until you draw the one perfect brush stroke.
So here is the challenge: Create a new piece of artwork without using CTRL-Z, or editing it. That means no colour changes, no layer changes, no cropping, no switching, or cutting and pasting.
This is to challenge yourself. To see the creative, improvising side of your mind.
So if you make a mistake.. just colour over it. You're an artist, aren't you? I'm sure you'll find some way.
If you try this challenge and end-up editing, and complete the artwork, you are only cheating yourself.
Remember, to err is Human.
Also, if you think something like this is impossible, just think about the traditional media painters and their massive canvases.

Well huuuurrrrr, so are professional comic colourists. *slaps person* (Sorry if they were a friend of yours, but that wasn't a constructive statement in any shape or form.)
I actually came here just to shed random lovage on you!
Hope you're okay! x

How about I quote you.

We were having a perfectly nice conversation A MONTH AGO. Way to come to her rescue.
She mentioned that there are colorist jobs out there, thats true but there aren't many of them. By using the word handicapped, I wasn't calling her retarded, I was merely saying that she would be limited in job choices whereas an artist that could do original art would have more to chose from.
Anina, I really hope you didn't take offense to my comment and if you did, i'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way.

I never assumed nor said you meant she was retarded. That IS taking it out of context. I'm not the only one who needs to read posts more carefully.
I don't think your point is necessarily true either, there are about as many colourist jobs out there for people who can't/don't like to draw as there are artist/lineart jobs for people who can't colour. Either are in demand, because you can take it into different fields. Eg, colourists suited in the Psychology field.
I didn't mean offense either, telling someone they need to be constructive IS constructive (Probably wasn't the best to put it in a sarcastic manner - apologies.) Unconstructive is "o manz, tat comment rly sucked, lol!"
PS. Sorry, that wasn't a "snide" comment.

I would have to disagree slightly with you on your job point. Is it possible to land a job as a colorist without being able to draw? Yes its possible but harder and usually unlikely hence why I used the term handicapped. Most of the american comic colorists that I've seen to date are amazing when it comes to lineart. I saw a recent ghost rider comic that had insane lineart and detail. The whole thing was drawn by a colorist. Most of these colorists have gone through some sort of art school where drawing was a requirement. I've never seen anybody color as well as Anina who couldn't draw. I suspect that she can draw but choses not to or is used to getting praised more for her colors rather than drawing to the point where she has stopped drawing. I really think she has lots of talent. I think she could go far but shes got a choice now to work on her weaknesses or just focus on her strengths. Just like an aspiring chef that says, I'm great at cooking steaks, I will only cook steaks. Are there steak-only chefs out there? Probably, but I don't think that pigeon-holeing yourself when you're trying to get your foot in the door is a good idea. Artists in the past and even sculptors were expected to have drawing skills, its a fundamental core skill. I personally would be very uneasy telling Anina that she should forget about drawing if she's planning to have a career in art. I would encourage her though to become a colorist if thats her goal but maybe speak with colorists and find out more about job requirements if thats her path.
I do know how unconstructive criticism can irritate, I've gone off on many buffoon before for posting things like "Dats the wurst thing I ever saws, lol". I do want to point out though that sometimes constructive criticismm isn't all sunshine and gumdrops. I've had a few really rough critiques that have knocked me down a few pegs before but sometimes it was what I needed. My goal in critiques is to be honest about the art in a way where the comments are made to help the artist in some way shape or form. I think we both want to see Anina succede but we have differing opinions about how to go about that.
BTW, I checked out your gallery, you have some really nice stuff up there.

It would suit everybody to focus on their weaknesses, but I think part of that is motivation, heh. I can't stand to draw modern architecture because I get so incredibly bored of it.
(You must bear in mind old traditional artists were also expected to be skilled in languages, music, etc. nowadays we only seem to focus on our strengths, and that's fair as they're in demand. But the fundamental core skills they have in drawing can be carried over into sculpture. That isn't to say what we learn from colouring can't be carried over to drawing and vice-versa, because things such as depth certainly can, but I don't personally feel they relate the same way.)
I would certainly agree with path of encouragement if Jess wishes to be a colourist.
No, you're right, I think constructive criticism is fantastic and in all I have a pet peeve for elite artists who think they don't need criticism. I'm sorry, but I felt you could've elaborated on your criticism to make it more constructive, and I'm sorry I went off the handlebar with how I handled it. But I'm glad we've cleared it up at least.
Thanks very much, so do you. You're particular good with dynamic poses!
